NOTES FROM PROGRAMMER:

This may well be the last of the 2D games from old Nurmweb, although it could technically be called a 3D isometric projection. I opted for the less frequently used variation: 45 degree overhead view without the 45 degree yaw. (Like the view in Diablo or Sim City turned 45 degrees.) The screenshots below explain that jargon. I chose this method because the screen height doesn't really allow for much scenery depth anyway and many developers do not even attempt this variation of the isometric view, so it will be somewhat unique. It's more about the graphics really.

The game uses some great character and scenery graphics from Reiner's Tilesets, which allowed me to focus on gameplay and motion planning (as well as some graphics that are easily taken for granted). The full credits are listed below under the game's help and info file which is reproduced below.

Although this game has not been rated by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, I give you my personal guarantee that it is safe for kids (or maybe teens), that is to say if you're OK with your kids controlling a devil that shoots fireballs at little monsters that explode into crystal jewels that jingle when you pick them up and talking to other comical demons and eventually confronting the big devil in a room with a few human corpses in the background. I even changed all of the original "H-E-double-hockey-sticks" references to innocuous variations in the help file. No bad words! Experience tells me however that the ESRB will probably rate it "T for Teen" for mild graphic violence and perhaps comic mischief. I may clean up the ending to get it an "E for Everyone". We'll see.

From the in-game Help file:

STORY:

As the only son of the last of the greater devils, Mephisto Jr. is the heir to the throne of the vast Underworld domain of Mephistopheles. However, over the eons of time, he has come to realize that the current ruler, his father, is immortal, and he will never become the ruler without knocking off Mephistopheles himself for good. This is normally impossible, but the good news is, Mephisto Jr.'s magic tutor just granted him a fireball attack spell for his 10,000th birthday and with it, there is a chance that Mephisto Jr. can light all the torches that open the gates of the Underworld...and also kick the butt of every demon he runs into. There's only one way to find out. Now go to Hades...and take over!

IN-GAME ITEMS:

  • Torches - Levels contain 20. Boss rooms and save rooms have 2 or more. They must all be lit to leave a room.
  • Magic Runes - They will completely fill your Magic meter. Without Magic, you are defenseless. It's your ammo. These re-appear after a while.
  • Healing Stones - They will completely fill your Health meter. They re-appear after a while.
  • Small Healing Stones - Reward for defeating tougher enemies like Super Firesprites. They replenish 25% of your health. These do not re-appear.
  • Soul Gems - Rare and beautiful, finding one grants another incarnation of life. Halleluiah!
  • Crystal Jewels - Treasure of the Underworld. Get them from chests, monsters and crystal formations. Use treasure to purchase saves and Fireball spell upgrades.
  • Gold - A very rare treasure in the Underworld. Very valuable and usually well-protected.
  • Beezel Brothers - They look like you but they're blue. Talk to them to save your game. You only get one chance to save with each of the brothers, so don't turn them down.

ENEMIES:

  • Lavaballs - They seem to roll out at you when you least expect. They can be destroyed, but it's probably easier to move out of the way if you see one coming. Touching one reduces your health by 50%. [5 hitpoints.]
  • Firesprites - Evil spirits made of pure fire. They constantly hurl fireballs at Mephisto Jr. while dancing a flaming jig. [5 hitpoints.]
  • Super Firesprites - They look identical to regular Firesprites, but they are much more dangerous. You'll know one when you see one by it's fancy dance. [10 hitpoints.]
  • Baby Dragons - The eyes and ears of level bosses. They can be found sleeping all over the Underworld. If you wake one, it will hurl fireballs at you relentlessly [20 hitpoints.]
  • Lava Trolls - Pick a fight with these monsters and they hurl fireballs like mad and sometimes summon other minions to attack you. [40 hitpoints.]
  • Blockheads - These are like floating totems that shoot fireballs at you when you come within their range. They guard precious things, like doors and treasure. [10 hitpoints.]
  • Puffheads - Similar to Blockheads, but they spray a deadly jet of hot gas in a circle around themselves. [invincible.]
  • Guardian Eyes - They fire a constant stream of spiked projectiles, but they can be temporarily stunned. [invincible.]
  • Spike Posts - They are posts with spiked balls that rotate around in a circle. Very dangerous! [invincible.]
  • Skull Spirits - Evil minions that inhabit giant skulls. They shoot fire, because everyone else in the Underworld seems to. [10 hitpoints.]
  • Cyclops - Beware these mean, green, little one-eyed, horned minions that carry magical weapons. [12 hitpoints.]
  • Walking Dead - These are like red-hot, fire shooting zombies from Heck...actually, that's exactly what they are. [15 hitpoints.]
  • Crocy - Elite Reptilian guard for you know who. [hitpoints unknown.]

DEMON BOSSES:

  • Lord Malelvo - Level 1 - He summons Lavaballs to protect himself while shooting you. You find him at the end of Level 1, Malelvo's Terrace. [50 hitpoints.]
  • Lord Malyndon - Level 2 - He can summon minions to keep you busy while shoot at you from behind a barricade. He's at the end of the first of the big level maps. Beware the gauntlet of Blockheads near the end of Level 2, Malyndon's Keep. [hitpoints unknown.]
  • Lord Malomar - Level 3 - He is a master of fantastic magical attacks. He is protected by a shield of invincible guardian eyes, the most dangerous of the creatures inhabiting the challenging Level 3, Malomar's Gauntlet.  [hitpoints unknown.]
  • Lord Malmond - Level 4 - He waits in a well-protected lair at the end of a huge gauntlet filled with dangerous minions, spanning two big level map rooms. Several new creatures and surprises await you in Level 4, through Malmond's Cavern and Malmond's Antechamber. [hitpoints unknown.]
  • Mephistopheles - Level 5 - The Underworld Overlord. The final battle, if you can make it. He summons dangerous minions and hides in the shadows. [hitpoints unknown.]

HINTS:

  1. You MUST light ALL TORCHES on a level to open the locked door to the next room. Your "Torches Remaining" count will give you an idea of how much farther you have to go. Some rooms have hidden torches that must be revealed, usually by destroying a monster or destroyable scenery. Light them when you see them. You don't want to backtrack!
  2. Collect as much treasure as you can! You'll end up needing lots!
  3. One level can span several rooms, and you will only be asked to save after successfully completing a level. However, if you die in a room, the room resets, so you won't necessarily start the whole game over if you die before saving.
  4. The Beezel Brothers can save your game for you, if you run into one. Also...they are known to carry lots of treasure. In other words, the crafty devil can get a lot of treasure at the Save/Load point in the game. Be ready after you load or save a game to try and get some treasure. The window of opportunity is narrow, but the reward can be fantastic!
  5. Find yourself dying a lot? Be aggressive! Don't be afraid to blast away with those fireballs! Remember, those Magic Runes will re-appear, if you are running low on Magic, so apply fireballs liberally to tough enemies. (Some bosses have over 100 hitpoints.)
